To mark this milestone, we are hosting a Hackathon focused on creating impact for the community. We are inviting local startups and tech & innovation teams at larger companies to help us solve real problems schools, teachers and students face today in Ontario.

Form a team of 3–5 colleagues (or friends) and join a week of problem-solving (virtually), guided by educators, community partners and Koru. This is your chance to connect with the tech ecosystem, build something from scratch, make a meaningful impact in your community and maybe learn a new skill or two along the way. Are you in? 🚀

Event Schedule

February 3

Problem brief released

The hackathon officially kicks off! 🎉 Selected teams will join us for a virtual kickoff call, where problem statements will be unveiled in collaboration with Ontario school boards.

February 4 - 12

Let the hacking begin!

Teams will dive into ideating, collaborating, and building impactful solutions for Ontario schools. During hack week, Koru will host optional in-person hacking days at our offices, providing a great opportunity to connect and collaborate in person. That being said, we are expecting this to be a part-time commitment, primarily remotely.

To guide your team to success, we’ll also host virtual workshops throughout the week, focusing on key milestones and strategies. Highlights include a special session on using AI to prototype quickly and effectively.

February 13

Final Hack Day: In-Person Judging

All hack teams will gather at OTPP’s offices (160 Front St W) for an exciting day starting with lunch at 1:00 PM. This is a chance to network, pitch your solution, and check out the incredible work from other teams.

The top three finalists will be selected to present their ideas one last time to an audience that includes members of Koru, affiliated ventures, school boards, OTPP and members of the tech ecosystem. After the final presentations, the winner will be announced, and all hackathon participants are invited to stick around and celebrate Koru’s 5th Anniversary.

Our Mission

An outlined version of the distinctive Koru K

Koru is a venture studio owned by the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan (OTPP). We partner with OTPP portfolio companies to launch new ventures that will ultimately improve the communities we touch, and deliver retirement security to teachers across Ontario.

We are a team of builders with extensive experience building, launching and scaling technology businesses. Leveraging a playbook we have refined over the years for launching new ventures, we work across the OTPP portfolio to identify opportunities for innovation through new products, services, and business models. To date, we’ve successfully launched 10 ventures and are actively working on many more.

We're seeking bold thinkers who thrive in ambiguity, love to learn, and are driven to solve problems and build new ventures.
